4x7 Antique Mohtashem Kashan Rug

:: Approximate weaving date 1880's. Paired with a classic Mohtashem border is one of the most unique field designs of this type: this truly is one of the most glorious Mohtashem Kashan carpets we have ever seen. Mohtashem Kashan carpets are not particularly common. Allover designs are even more rare. Sampling a limited amount of carpets that exist in auction house databases, we have determined approximately 80-85% of Mohtashem Kashan rugs feature a center medallion. Another 10-15% are unidirectional thematic carpets such as pictorial, prayer, or tree of life. The remaining 5% or fewer are allover designs. Of these, this is one of the only repeating designs we have ever seen. In conjunction with the ultra fine weave, earlier weaving date, phenomenal motif of paisley botehs and stunning rust ground, this is quite the example! While the condition is fair, the carpet is most entirely in original condition with no end or side reduction. There are areas on the reverse of the rug with old glue residue. Two or three small holes exist in the field of the rug due to wear/use. The carpet has splits. There are some small areas where the original silk selvage shows on the edge. Would be an outstanding candidate for minor repair / linen conservation (additional) and use as a wall hanging. Measurements: 4'5" x 7'1".
