:: Beautiful vintage Cyrus Crown® Kerman carpet. This particular example was likely woven in the early 1950's, likely 1951-53. The clarity of the pile is great, and the detail in the Crown (top and center), is very good. The pile is plush and soft, retaining original character with high luster and sheen. In a time when many rugs were being reduced in quality and material, Cyrus Crown® rug production maintained only the highest in quality standards. The red field of this rug, as one example of many superior points, is derived from natural cochineal dye. This carpet is a good example of the better part of Kerman rug weaving in the mid 20th century. Cyrus Crown® insignia found at the top center of the main border. Recently professionally cleaned, ready for in-home use. Please view photos very carefully regarding condition and note one small blemish area (more predominantly perceptible from the light side) just below the medallion in a 4" x 7" area. Carpet measures approximately 4'4" x 6'7".

::Cyrus Crown production of hand knotted Kerman Oriental Rugs spanned 1920 - 1960, producing fewer than 25,000 carpets during the 40 +/- years (Fewer than an average of 650 carpets per year). The carpets were signed with the Mehdi Dilmaghani & Co. Inc. trademark of a Crown. In and around the 1930's cochineal became very difficult and costly to obtain. For this reason, many rug manufacturers opted for inferior dyes. However, the manufacturing of Cyrus Crown carpets continued sourcing only the best materials long after others abandoned them. In the case of natural cochineal as this carpet features, Cyrus Crown Kermans continued to use natural dyes fifteen, twenty even thirty years after many others deemed them too difficult and costly to continue weaving with. The firm went to great lengths to continue their high quality standards, which meant sourcing and importing cochineal from as far away as the Canary Islands.
