Our Story

Thank you for your interest in the story of Old New House! We are Melissa + Dave - the husband and wife team curators and creators behind ONH and what began as a hobby in 2010 has turned into a life passion that we pour ourselves into every day.

With great care and attention to the finest of details, we hand select every single antique and vintage piece that you see in our shop.  We also design and craft every new original piece completely in house, and truly with our own hands, in New York.

Our story is ultimately about telling and connecting to the stories of others through items of the past and through the items we dream up. We view our items as a unique collection of functional, well crafted and special olds + news for the house that you will have a tough time finding anywhere else in the world.

To fully express how much pride we take in our merchandise both old and new, you should know a bit more about our backgrounds:

Dave is a 5th generation rug man - his family's history in designing, manufacturing, and importing Oriental Rugs dates back to the mid 1800s. Dave's interest in old carpets has especially grown throughout the years, fascinated by what his own ancestors may have seen, touched and been a part of in some way. And, just like his ancestors before him, quality and craftsmanship is of the utmost importance. While often viewed as decorative, Dave views rugs as works of art that stand the test of time. He hand selects the most unique, intricate, decorative and most attractive carpets to be ONH rugs, and he won't settle for anything less.

Melissa first fell in love with the world of vintage when she was a little girl and would wander around her grandmother's house to find 1950s/60s treasures tucked in every nook and cranny. It was a time machine for the mid century era, and she loved every bit of it. Throughout her youth she would frequent vintage and antique shops with her mom and would view all of the items in them as pieces of everyone's story. Chairs were the most interesting as staples in every day life: she loved thinking up what kinds of stories they had etched into them. For ONH, Melissa hand selects the most unique chairs and household items she can get her hands on, and looks for originality and rarity at every corner as it is these characteristics that spark the most curiosity and wonder. She went on to focus on photography in her life and since the start of Old New House, she has enjoyed capturing each item's story through taking pictures of them.

Together, as a two-person team (with our little son in tow), we have blended our specialties and interests to follow a specific criteria of what we are looking for. We hope that you will enjoy looking through our collections and that you will enjoy owning your own ONH piece!

As creative souls who thrive on rediscovering old artistic treasures and crafting new ones, we are constantly adding new items to ONH. We hope you will keep on the lookout for our new discoveries and we would love to hear from you if you have ideas, questions, thoughts, or your own story to share!  Contact us - md (at) oldnewhouse (dot) com and we will look forward to being in touch.
