5.5x9.5 Antique Kermanshah Carpet
:: Extremely Fine and Rare Qajar Period Kermanshah Rug, circa third quarter 19th century.
An exceptional and museum-worthy example of Persian artistry from the high Qajar period, this Kermanshah carpet represents one of the finest surviving examples of 19th-century Persian weaving. Featuring a masterfully articulated Tree of Life composition, it is distinguished by surrealist elements most notably a devil figure ingeniously concealed within a floral vase surrounded by double dragon floral arabesques outwardly directed from the base a highly unusual motif, reflective of the fantasy traditions associated with Zil-i-Sultan court designs of the time.
The pile is woven of luxuriously fine Kork wool, offering a silky texture and luminous sheen, while the foundation is composed of durable cotton, typical of elite Kermanshah workshop production. The knotting is quite fine, executed with asymmetrical (Persian) knots, creating fluidity and incredible detail across the field. Natural dyes produce a harmonious palette that has aged with remarkable softness and subtlety.
More than a technical marvel, this carpet stands apart for its unique iconography, merging classical Persian symbolism with rare anthropomorphic and mythological imagery. Rugs of this caliber combining imaginative surrealist motifs with master-level weaving technique seldom survive from the period, particularly in such well-preserved condition.
A singular and historically important collector's piece, suitable for advanced private collections, connoisseurs of Qajar-period Persian weavings, or institutional acquisition.
Colors and shades include: Powder blue, dried orange, coffee brown, sapphire blue, ivory, cream, cochineal red, dusty raspberry red, moss green, navy blue and more. Condition notes: Areas of pile and knot heads. Original side cord selvages intact. Fully secured sides and ends. Some lower pile with light corrosion to darker shades in the brown family. One area of etching from moths approximately 1" x 1" to the blue field. Recently professionally cleaned ready for in-home use! Many years of enjoyment to come with this hand knotted Persian Kermanshah carpet made in Persia circa 1870's vintage. Size measures 5'5" x 9'5".
