2x3 Antique Silk Persian Tabriz Rug Mat

:: Diminutive Antique Silk Tabriz rug mat. Rare type + rare size antique silk Tabriz ca. 1870 of the 'Haji Jalili' variety. Center medallion with open burgundy field. Some very light hints of green and soft jewel blue. A true gem with great knot density. The rug measures in excess of 400 knots per inch: without an immediate reference point for size, the intricacy of this rug lends to the appearance of a carpet in much large proportions. A very fine weave. There were never a great deal of these made: While the type itself is relatively rare, the most common size is approximately 4x6, and many of the smaller sizes were woven much less frequently and considerably more prone to damage or loss. Only a handful of this size, type and age ever surface, with only a few sold publicly in the last several decades only to be stowed away in private collections.
