Islimi Motif in Oriental and Persian Rugs

Islimis are classical design elements commonly found in Oriental rugs and Persian carpets. They are easily recognized as flowing, spiral vines that move rhythmically through a composition, often forming the connective structure that links other decorative elements together.

Islimis may circle in either direction and are frequently incorporated into symmetrical half- or quarter-map designs, where the full pattern is achieved through mirrored repetition. This structural role makes the Islimi an essential organizing element within many traditional rug layouts.

In many examples, Islimis weave through and incorporate additional motifs along their path. In the example shown to the left and below, the Islimi integrates palmettes as part of its flowing vine structure, demonstrating how multiple design elements work together within a unified system.

It is not uncommon for an Islimi to terminate at a focal point such as a palmette, a cypress tree, or an arabesque. These endpoints help define visual rhythm and balance while reinforcing the overall symmetry of the design.

Islimi motifs appear across many rug-producing regions, but they are especially associated with high-quality Persian rugs from workshops such as Nain, Isfahan, and Meshed. Perhaps the most widely recognized and celebrated use of the Islimi can be found in the famous Ardabil Carpets.
